What I Do

I will carry out a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment in your own home. Based on this assessment we will discuss your rehabilitation goals and preferences and design a treatment plan. Working together in your home will reduce the inconvenience, fatigue and support required to attend clinic appointments. It also means that we are working on real-life tasks and goals that are important to you, such as walking around your garden, practising the stairs or reducing your risk of falling. Your family are welcome to attend rehabilitation sessions and I am happy to teach family members or carers how to support your recovery. Each treatment session will help to build your ability and confidence to undertake daily activities. We will review your progress frequently to ensure you are satisfied with the approach and your progress.

What is Neuro-Physiotherapy?

Neurological Physiotherapy is all about helping you to move and function within the context of your neurological symptoms. Every person is different and neurological symptoms can include weakness, altered sensation, fatigue, spasms, balance problems or pain. Your treatment programme will depend on your unique presentation, personal preferences and goals. Interventions include movement re-education work to improve your ability to balance, walk and use your hands in daily life. I will support you to undertake a personalised training programme to improve your strength, fitness and function.

Task-based training is essential to improve your ability to carry out everyday tasks and I will focus on practical treatment interventions that can make a real difference. I will help you to find ways to do the things that are important to you – this may require use of equipment or different movement patterns. Prevention of complications is important in all neurological conditions. I will help you to maintain the movement ability you currently have and show you how to limit the impact of pain, stiffness or weakness. I can advise on comfortable positioning techniques, use of splints and mobility aids. I can also support you to return to active hobbies such as swimming, tennis or yoga.

Practice makes perfect….. practising rehabilitation activities after a brain injury or stroke encourages your brain to build new connections, enabling better control of your body. This process is called neuroplasticity and there is no time limit on it. You can continue to improve even years after a stroke. Although not everyone can make a full recovery, due to the extent of their stroke or neurological impairment, most people can make progress with their personal goals such as getting stronger, more mobile or more independent. Practising simple activities in between physiotherapy sessions can make all the difference in achieving your goals. I will support you to get moving and do as much as possible for yourself, building confidence, stamina and skill as you progress. Your goals may be small to start with, but small achievements can make a big difference in everyday life.
